Although the myth of Icarus has ancient origins, its use in tattoo art has been more recent than one might think. One of the first times this myth was used to inspire tattoo art was in the 19th century by French sculptor Auguste Bartholdi, who created several sculptures that depicted Icarus falling into the sea, including one he included in his famous Statue of Liberty monument in New York City.

Who was Icarus?

In Greek mythology, Icarus was the son of famed Greek inventor Daedalus. In one story, Icarus and his father attempted to escape from Crete by means of wings created by Daedalus. While flying over the sea, Icarus ignored his father’s warning not to fly too close to the sun; his wings melted and he fell into the sea and drowned. In another version of the myth, however, it is Icarus who creates a pair of wax-and-feather wings for himself and his father with instructions on how best to use them in order for them both to escape their prison. But again, Icarus decides that he knows better than his father does, fails to heed Daedalus’ warnings about flying too high or too low and plunges into the sea below.

If you are trying to overcome something—perhaps even an addiction—then you might want to consider having your struggle represented on your body. Perhaps they failed at business or suffered a personal tragedy and are trying to start over with new goals in mind. Whatever your reasons may be for choosing an Icarus tattoo design, keep in mind that tattoos have meaning far beyond just their appearance.
