What is a Japanese Temple called?

A Japanese temple is called a “tera”. The word “tera” refers to the sacred buildings used for religious purposes by the Japanese. The word tera is usually written in kanji characters as 寺, and also as 寺庙.

The most popular form of Japanese architecture is the Shinto style. It is characterized by its simplicity and elegance. The buildings are typically constructed with wood, bamboo or stone and they have no nails or screws; instead, they are held together with wooden pegs or wooden dowels (which are made from two pieces of wood).

The buildings consist of two parts: an entrance part known as Gassho-Daimon (拝殿) which contains the main hall (honden), offering hall (heiden), purification room (haraedono), treasure house (toshidono), veranda (hisashi) and other structures; and a back part called Niōmon (仁王門), which houses Buddhist images such as Niō, Yakushi Nyorai and Amida Nyorai.
